We get asked a lot of great questions, about our products, our farm, how to cook pulses, and how wholesale works. We’ve gathered the most common ones here. If you don’t see yours, just reach out. We’re real people on a real farm, and we’re happy to talk.
We sell dried pulses, specifically Kabuli chickpeas, black chickpeas, black lentils, Eston lentils, and yellow mustard seed. Everything is non-GMO, triple-cleaned, and sourced directly from our partner farm in Great Falls, Montana. We’re not a grocery brand that buys from whoever’s cheapest, we’re the actual growing operation, and that’s what makes the difference in what ends up in your bag.
Kabuli chickpeas are the large, cream-colored ones most people picture when they think “chickpeas.” They’re what you want for hummus, salads, and roasting. Black chickpeas (also called Desi) are smaller, darker, and nuttier; they’re popular in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking and actually pack a bit more protein per gram. We grow both on the same Montana farmland.
Black lentils have a rich, earthy flavor and hold their shape really well when cooked. They’re what you want for dal, warm salads, and dishes where you need the lentil to stay intact. Eston lentils are small green lentils with a milder, slightly peppery taste. They’re incredibly versatile, great for soups, stews, side dishes, and anywhere you want a lentil that cooks evenly and absorbs flavor. Both are high in protein, iron, and fiber.
Lentils generally don’t need soaking; just rinse and cook. Chickpeas do best with an overnight soak (8–12 hours in cold water), which cuts cooking time in half and gives you a creamier result. Every bag of SunGrown pulses includes soaking and cooking instructions, and we have step-by-step guides on our Recipes page if you want more detail. If you’re new to cooking dried pulses, don’t be intimidated, it’s simpler than you think, and the flavor difference compared to canned is worth it.
Our pulses are not certified organic. Getting that certification can run $45,000–$100,000, and right now we’d rather put that money into better pricing for you and better practices on the farm. What we can tell you is that our crops are non-GMO, grown using responsible farming methods, and we’re transparent about every step of the process. If you want to know how something was grown, ask us, and we’ll tell you.
Yes. You can buy SunGrown chickpeas, lentils, and mustard seeds online through our shop in convenient 2-pound bags. We ship nationwide across the United States, right to your door. Just pick your products, check out, and we’ll handle the rest.
We do. SunGrown ships to all 50 states. Our farm is in Montana, but our pulses end up in kitchens, restaurants, and co-ops from Maine to California. Orders typically arrive within 5–7 business days. Wholesale and bulk shipments are coordinated with our logistics team based on volume and destination.
For home cooks, we sell 2-pound bags through our online shop. For restaurants, co-ops, and commercial buyers, we offer 50-pound bags, pallet quantities, and full truckload volumes. And if you want something in between, just ask, we’re flexible.
Our minimum wholesale order starts at 50 pounds. From there, we can scale to volume depending on what your operation needs. There’s no order too big; we’re partnered with one of the largest pulse farms in North America, so supply is never an issue.
Because we’re farm-direct. Most brands buy their pulses from brokers, who buy from processors, who buy from farms. Every handoff adds a markup. SunGrown skips all of that, we partner directly with the growing operation, which means our pricing doesn’t carry the weight of three middlemen. For bulk buyers, that can mean 15–25% savings compared to distributor-sourced alternatives.
Of course. We want you to taste the difference before you commit. If you’re a chef, restaurant buyer, or wholesale customer, just mention samples in your inquiry, and we’ll get them out to you. There’s no pressure, we’re confident that once you cook with our pulses, you’ll understand why people switch to SunGrown.
